The man, who The Courier cannot name for legal reasons, appeared in the dock of the County Court in Ballarat flanked by two police officers this week.
Prosecutors opposed his release from prison, saying he had previously breached intervention orders and ignored bail conditions in recent years.
The court heard in October, 2016, he broke into the backyard of a former partner’s Melbourne home when her new boyfriend was outside having a cigarette late at night.
Prosecutors said the man ran at the boyfriend armed with a knife and a tomahawk before a scuffle broke out.
The court was told the boyfriend managed to defend himself and found the man was carrying a backpack containing two sets of handcuffs, a bundle of orange rope, rubber gloves, scissors, a bottle of methylated spirits, matches and a camera.
On Friday, a police detective sat in the court’s witness box and said officers also opposed his bail application.
“It’s been quite obvious to us he holds no regards for bail conditions and he has been shown to be obsessive with his victims,” she said.
“We have major concerns.”
Details of the alleged offences relating to the upcoming trial were not disclosed in the courtroom.
The man’s defence lawyer said his client had been assaulted in jail.
However, Judge Liz Gaynor said she was concerned he would re-offend if released and denied his bail application.
“He has demonstrated a complete disregard for remaining crime free on numerous occasions,” she said.
The man was remanded in custody and led back into the cells by police.
He will re-appear in the County Court in July for the trial.
