D24 radio centre in "a time warp"

DELAYS in relocating Ballarat's ageing D24 police communications centre to a purpose-built office in Mt Helen have again come under the spotlight in State Parliament.Western Victoria MLC John Vogels raised the issue in State Parliament last week following revelations at the Bushfire Royal Commission hearings that the analogue centre could not keep up with the volume of calls.According to Police Association Secretary Greg Davies officers still use hand-written cards to log jobs.During busy times the call taker, who would then read the job to a despatcher, could not keep up with the volume. The Country Fire Authority has made its shift to the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority with State Emergency Service despatch calls also handled at the centre. All Melbourne emergency calls for police, fire, ambulance and the SES are taken at Mt Helen.Funding to move police D24 operations to the ESTA centre at Mt Helen was not received in the 2009-10 state budget.Mr Davies said the Mair St D24 operations centre had antiquated equipment and police deserved better."The equipment has been there for decades,'' he said."I would think it goes back to potentially the 60s. We are in the 21st century and using stuff designed before man walked on the moon."We were the first police force in the world to have radios in cars, and we now have radios and systems out of date.''Victoria Police spokeswoman Rosanna Bonaccurso said talks with the State Government were continuing."Victoria Police is continuing its discussions with the State Government about D24 regional communication arrangements across the organisation,'' she said. However, Mr Vogels said it was incumbent on Police Minister Bob Cameron to ensure D24 was moved forward from its "time warp''."They deserve nothing less,'' he said.
