CRICKET: Ballarat's Jack Sheppard gets Premier League debut

FORMER Golden Point youngster and Ballarat Cricket Association under-16 best and fairest Jack Sheppard will make his Premier League first eleven debut for Footscray tomorrow.Sheppard will play against powerhouse Melbourne at the Albert Oval in Melbourne.Sheppard, who played in the Golden Point firsts as a 15-year-old, has played at the Bulldogs since the 2004/2005 season, working his way up through the ranks. The past two seasons have seen him play in the seconds. With Victorian Bushranger representatives including John Hastings, Grant Lindsay and until recently Gerard Denton in the side, opportunities in the firsts for the all-rounder were rare. However, Sheppard has been learning his trade and taking bags of wickets and making important contributions with the bat, which has earnt the call-up.The 21-year-old law student has worked hard to achieve his goal and is seen in some quarters as a potential future leader of the Bulldogs. Two years ago he made the under-19 Victorian squad and the season before won man-of-the-match honours in the under-18 Victorian state final when representing Central Highlands against eventual champions, Southern Rangers.Sheppard said although both of these achievements were significant, being selected for his first game in the Footscray firsts was a lifelong dream."I have played in our Twenty20 team for the past two seasons, but to be selected for round one against Melbourne is fantastic," Sheppard said."I have dreamed of doing this since I was a little bloke."My brother Sam (who still plays with Golden Point) and I used to play in the backyard and dream of one day playing district cricket. Sam was a great coach for me and we look forward to playing together again one day at the end of our careers."
