REVAMPED netball courts are ready for action in the 2010 Ballarat Football League season.Acrylic Plexipave surfaces - specifically designed for netball - were officially opened across the region yesterday.Courts at Sebastopol's Marty Busch Reserve and North Ballarat City home base Eureka Stadium required total reconstruction, including fencing, posts, player shelters and sports lighting.Existing courts at Ballarat's Dahlsens Park and Learmonth Recreation Reserve were resurfaced and facilities given a face-lift. All surfaces have been laid in club colours.Works were funded by a $250,000 grant under the Federal Government regional and local community and infrastructure plan and $28,000 from Ballarat City Council, Sport and Recreation Victoria, the BFL and clubs.Sebastopol and North Ballarat City have been without home courts the past two seasons. The Burras played home games at nearby St James Primary School while North was forced to be nomadic. Both clubs said it had impacted on gate-takings and match-day revenue.Sebastopol netball director Georgina Bryant said, most importantly, the new court would create more of a whole-club atmosphere."It was hard knowing the footballers were across the road training or playing and we couldn't watch each other - now it will be easier on spectators too," Ms Bryant said."We're really happy."It's been a long time coming, plenty of people helped out and we're glad it's finally here."The Burras' netball facility includes and enclosed warm-up area next to its trademark blue court with its yellow markings.Ms Bryant said being able to lock the court would also help keep it in top condition for match-day.North Ballarat City christened its court on Monday night by switching on the lights after a board meeting. The court remains on the western side of the grand-stand in its original location.North Ballarat Football Club chairman Peter Wilson said a "state-of-the-art", grey and white netball court was an impressive addition to the Eureka Stadium precinct."It's fantastic for the club and particularly for our long suffering netballlers," Mr Wilson said."There are no excuses for our netballers to not perform well with a court like this to train on."Redan remains the only BFL club without netball facilities at its home ground.RegionalOne BFL operations manager Aaron Nunn said the new courts were great for the sport and should encourage new recruits, especially with the introduction of a C grade into the competition next season.Federal grants for the courts were part of a $1 billion nation building economic stimulus plan with Ballarat courts amid 3,000 projects nationwide.Ballarat MHR Catherine King said netball was a passion in Ballarat and she was pleased to see the upgrades complete.Work is also underway to upgrade the Colin Smith Velodrome at Marty Busch Reserve.
