NOT wanting to miss Australia's national day, the first of Ballarat's newest residents were keen to make their entrances yesterday. After an hour-and-a-half labour, Zane Jasper Osborne was the first Ballarat baby of the day, arriving at the Base Hospital at 5.06am.Next door at St John of God Hospital, Ethan James Van Gaans was born at 5.45am, five minutes after his mother arrived at emergency and two hours after labour began.Zane was expected last Saturday, his mother Melanie Osborne's birthday, but waited for Australia's big day.Weighing in at an even seven pounds, Zane was a little lighter than his two older sisters Tabitha, 5, and Darcie, 4, who were both around the eight-and-half pound mark."In the last couple of weeks the girls have been saying they thought the baby was a boy and that it would be nice to have a baby brother," Ms Osborne said.Darren Osborne was thrilled to welcome a son and said his profession as a geologist led to the choice of Jasper, a precious stone, as Zane's middle name. His sisters' middle names are Jade and Jewel.Ethan Van Gaans arrived just minutes after his mother Tracey arrived at hospital. Ethan, the Van Gaans' fifth child, shares his Australia Day birthday with one of his cousins.Ethan has three older sisters Monet, 16, Jessica, 14, and Olivia-Rose, 9.The only boy for eight years, big brother Damian, 8, can't wait to teach him how to play with trains and kick a soccer ball.
