Murderer Darren Ellis avoids drug charge

A DRUG charge against convicted murderer Darren John Ellis was dropped yesterday.Ellis was jailed for 21 years in 2008 after being found guilty of the 2006 murder of his girlfriend, 19-year-old Naomi Maree Bernaldo.He was to face a charge of possessing equipment to manufacture a drug of dependence, but police withdrew the charge at Ballarat Magistrates Court.Ms Bernaldo's body was discovered by a kayaker in St George's Lake, Creswick, in November 2006.Ellis was sentenced to 21 years' jail with a non-parole period of 17 years.
