A MOUNT Clear woman is devastated by the theft of her late mother's jewellery during a break-in at her home this week.A sapphire ring and a distinctive fish-shaped marquisite brooch were stolen from the woman's Grandison Avenue home — one of two houses targeted by thieves on Tuesday afternoon. The woman, who did not want to be named, was angered by the theft.''I was shocked when I first discovered my house had been broken into, but now I'm just angry,'' she said. Also stolen from the woman's house was a pale pink string of pearls, a pair of pearl earrings, a gold ring with three sapphires, a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings and a gold necklace.''The pink pearls were very sentimental, because my son gave them to be for my 60th birthday. The sapphire and diamond earrings were also special to me, because they were a gift from my son for my 50th birthday,'' the Mount Clear woman said. The jewellery has been valued at $2000.The woman discovered the theft after returning from lunch with friends and finding the passage door shut. ''That door is never closed and I thought it was unusual,'' she said. Also upsetting for the Mt Clear grandmother was the fact that her clothes were strewn over her bedroom floor by the thieves.Senior Constable Kim Oliva from Buninyong said the thieves used garden shears to smash a window, which had been security-locked.The incident happened between 1.15pm and 8.30pm Tuesday.During the second Grandison Avenue burglary, only three doors away, thieves stole a collection of jewellery and a travel bag. The goods were valued at $1200.Police said a door of the home was forced to gain entry between 12.30pm and 4pm Tuesday.Anyone with information can contact Buninyong Police Station on 5341 3431, Ballarat police on 5336 6000 or CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.
