JIM Gull has been named the Ballarat Football League's second Legend. The former South Melbourne player and 1961 Daylesford premiership captain-coach was elevated to Legend status at last night's BFL Hall of Fame dinner, joining the league's great administrator Bill Henderson.Jim Gull passed away in November 2007. His award was accepted last night by his son Stewart.Seven others were inducted into the Hall of Fame, including The Courier's former chief football writer Jim Murphy, and ex-St Kilda, Melbourne and Golden Point champion Peter Kiel.North Ballarat icon John Orr, Sebastopol great Chris Parker, Ballarat's two-time Henderson Medallist Don Discher, Redan stalwart Val Stewart, and three-time North Ballarat premiership player and East Ballarat team of the century member Michael Frawley were also honoured with Hall of Fame induction. ''It's very special,'' Orr said.''To join such names, including a couple of league footballers, it makes it very special. You don't often reflect on your career that much.''Jim Murphy, who died last year, and Val Stewart were honoured posthumously. Murphy's Hall of Fame award was accepted by his eldest son John, while Stewart's was received by son Rob.''(Jim) loved all sport but football was his favourite,'' John Murphy explained.''He'd be humbled but he'd also be pretty proud of being recognised by the Ballarat footy community.''I'm sure he would have made light of (Hall of Fame membership) but he kept all his awards together. They certainly meant a lot to him and this one would have been front and centre.''Michael Frawley was joined at the presentation by son James Frawley, a rising star at the Melbourne Football Club who was best afield in the Demons' victory over Richmond on Sunday, and brother and former St Kilda captain Danny, the guest speaker for the evening.''I was not really aware of how much he had done in football,'' James Frawley admitted. ''He always told me he was a pretty handy footballer.''Hall of Fame inductees ''must exemplify the highest standard of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character'' and ''enjoy the respect of peers and officials within the football and netball fraternity'', according to the BFL's selection criteria. Nominees can be drawn from football, netball, administration, media or be volunteers. The ''Legend'' title honours those who have the most significant impact and changed the game or organisation significantly for the better, and can be bestowed on no more than 20 per cent of Hall of Fame inductees.
