HADDON fighters have hauled off much of the silverware at this month's Shinkyokushin karate Australian Open tournament at the Reggio Calabria Club.Damashii Dojo's Alexander Kocic took out his second Australian title with victory in the men's heavyweight division, while stablemate Grant Wyatt was awarded grand champion of the tournament after winning the middleweight division. The event attracted 74 competitors from Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and New Zealand, representing a variety of karate, including Kyokushin, Byakuran and Shim-Bu-Kai.With the retirement of a number of former champions, the door has opened for younger fighters seeking national selection.Kocic, 21, used his formidable array of kicking techniques and his 193cm frame to good effect in securing the heavyweight title. Wyatt, 25, showed the extent of his improvement in middleweight. He was followed closely by another Damashii Dojo fighter, 24-year-old Matthew Prodanovic, a fine technician who placed second in the middleweight division and was also awarded the Fighting Spirit trophy.Damashii Dojo's newest star was eight-year-old Chelsie Smith who impressed a visiting Japanese champion with her polished display of Kata, earning her the title.
