RESTORATION works on the Eureka Flag are going to plan. The flag was shipped to Adelaide for the works in September after the Ballarat City Council announced the flag would undergo a restoration.Textile conservation specialist Artlab Australia was commissioned to conduct the preservation project. The flag was sewn more than 150 years ago with conservation works last carried out in 1973.Council's destination and connections executive manager George Sossi said the restoration was going according to schedule. He said that Art Gallery of Ballarat director Gordon Morrison would travel to Adelaide on Friday to chose the backing material that the flag would be mounted on.This will then be dyed by Ballarat-based company Bulace Dyeing at no cost.Mr Sossi said small samples of fibre had been sent to the CSIRO to determine the appropriate light levels for the flag.He said the original dye used was a Prussian blue, which showed there was no other colour used in the flag.Council set aside $100,000 for the flag's restoration in its budget. The flag will be presented in a new air tight glass case. The restoration works are expected to take about six months.
