CAR bug protection screens are flying out the door at Ballarat suppliers due to fears of locust swarms.Supercheap Auto Ballarat sold 51 screens at the weekend while Autobarn Ballarat has already sold out of its stock.Autobarn Ballarat manager Emma Palonek said they were struggling to keep up with demand."We ordered 60 of them last week and they're gone," she said."We're trying to keep up with customer orders."The screens, made out of double looped shade cloth trap bugs in the mesh and stop car radiators and air conditioning condensers from blocking up with insects and over-heating.They can be then taken off and hosed down before being reattached with cable ties. While large-sized bug screens are the most popular brand at Autobarn, Supercheap Auto Ballarat manager Alana Harris said they were selling 16 to 20 units a day, mostly medium-size."We're waiting on a delivery. I think we'll be selling a lot more."While locust sightings in Ballarat have been limited, swarms have been reported from Horsham through to Stawell, though most of the locust activity has so far been reported in northern Victoria.Last week, VicRoads regional director western Victoria Lance Midgley warned drivers to be cautious if they did come across locust swarms."Slow down gradually, turn your headlights on and leave a larger gap between you and any vehicle in front of you," Mr Midgley said."If you hit a swarm of locusts and your visibility is reduced, pull over to the side of the road."
