Flash flooding at Ballarat

BALLARAT is experiencing some flash flooding this morning with more than 20mm of rain being dumped on the city since 9am.Emergency services are being kept busy, with many Ballarat roads and backyards reportedly under water.Affected areas include Albert St, Sebastopol; Gillies St and Dowling St, Wendouree; Jasmine Drive and Greenhalghs Rd, Delacombe; Avoca Cres, Alfredton; and Errard St, Ballarat.Have you experienced any flash flooding in the Ballarat region? The State Emergency Services has had over 60 call outs for flooding across the Central Highlands region since midnight.SES spokeswoman Sophie Jackson said a control unit had been established in Ballarat for the Grampians and the mid-western parts of the state and would run for the next 24 hours."We’ve also got an incident control centre in Bendigo to monitor the Loddon region, and another centre could be opened for the Barwon region if the flood threat gets serious enough," she said.There have been 14 call outs in Ballarat alone, whilst residents from Horsham, Stall and Ararat have also required emergency assistance.Do you have any photos of flash flooding in the Ballarat region? ICC Operations Officer John Hooper warned residents to stay away from flood waters.''If there's flood water in your area don't walk, play or swim in it, and please don't drive through it,'' Mr Hooper said.''Above all be vigilant and keep an eye out for your neighbours. Lets help each other.''Mr Hooper said that heavy rains were expected to continue through to midnight tonight.Earlier today, the Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe weather warning for western, northern and central Victoria.Along with rain and thunderstorms that could lead to flash flooding, the bureau has forecast damaging winds averaging 60 to 70km/h with peak gusts around 110-120km/h.Roads across the state, including the Sunraysia Hwy at Lexton and Ingliston Rd at Ballan, have been closed due to flood and storm damage.Click here for a full list of VicRoads' road closures. Latest figures from the bureau show Ballarat has received 27.8mm of rain between 9am and 5pm today.More than 108mm has been dumped on the city so far this month — almost three times Ballarat's January average of 38.1mm.
