MORE than 1000 cyclists strapped on their helmets and pulled on their bike shorts to raise money for the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre yesterday. The 2011 Ballarat Come To Life Cycle Classic was held yesterday, with an estimated 1150 riders taking part in the fundraiser.Although rider numbers were slightly down on last year, a record amount of money was raised for the research centre.About $150,000 was raised, a great improvement on the previous year’s total of about $80,000.Janelle Yates, one of the event organisers, said the attitude of everybody involved stood out above anything else. She said there were random volunteers that just wanted to lend a hand on the day.“Everyone was amazing, whether they were there for the cause or for the ride, they were just amazing,” she said.“Despite the weather it was an awesome effort from everybody.”The event is now in its fourth year and Ms Yates said she hoped it would continue to grow. She said there were plans to turn the event into a week-long event, incorporating many forms of cycling.
