PRE-ROMAN coins and stamps that predate the postcode system will be among a host of coins and stamps on show at the Ballarat Eureka Stamp Fair on Monday. The Ballarat Philatelic Society, in their 107th year, is running the event, which will showcase coins and stamps from all over the world, as well as bronze tokens that were later replaced by coins and various collections of bank notes.Member and long-time collector Yvonne Cruickshanks said local residents were often amazed by the popularity of coin and stamp collecting.“I think people would be surprised by how many collectors there are in the Ballarat area,” she said.“It’s great because you meet a lot of people doing it, that’s how I met my husband.”Ms Cruickshanks, who has owned the Ballarat Coin and Stamp Centre since she bought it from her father in 1987, will be putting her collection of Australian stamps on show, as well as her specialty themes Norfolk Island, Christmas Island and Antarctica. She urged local residents to take part in the annual event.“Come down and have a look and see if you can buy something you’re after,” she said. “You might find an interesting item or snap up a bargain.”There will be 36 dealer tables on the day as well as prizes, giveaways and free valuations. The fair will be held at the Ballarat Specialist School in Gillies Street between 9.30am and 3.30pm on Monday, March 14.
