BALLARAT City Council will plough more than $4 million into sporting facilities if its draft budget is passed.A second Alfredton Recreation Reserve oval will be built, using a “village green” concept so it can be used by a wide range of outdoor turf-based sports. It will cater for Australian Rules football, soccer and cricket in what council sees as its key growth zone of Ballarat West.Drought-tolerant grass and training lights will mean the new oval can be used for year round training and match play, taking the pressure off the existing oval’s turf management. It will double capacity at the reserve and allow for soccer to also be played there. If approved, tenders for the project will be called in July or August, with the playing field to be finished in time for the 2012 winter season.Ballarat Football Club president Shane Manley said the oval was not a want but a neccessity.“There are 400 odd pairs of legs on this (current) oval in one week. It is the most over-used oval in Ballarat,” Mr Manley said. “It is far better the money is spent on a grass roots sporting club.”The club’s junior vice-president Karl Drever said training currently had to be split up over different nights to cater for the large numbers.“There are just too many kids,” Mr Drever said.Ballarat-Redan Cricket Club president Grant Cassidy also welcomed the upgrade news, with 12 sides taking to the field every summer.Cr John Philips said the “village green” aspect meant it would cater for a wide range of sports while not having any fences or boundaries.“It will give a family atmosphere and make it more user-friendly,” Cr Philips said.A further $1.4 million will go towards Prince of Wales Park upgrades, including a new fully-lit carpark and walking paths to connect it to Lake Gardens, Lake Wendouree and the Wendouree Train Station.A further $500,000 will be allocated to pavilion works at the Ballarat Regional Football Facility, home of soccer. It will include six change rooms, social areas, umpire and first aid rooms and some undercover seating.Buninyong District Tennis Association will get $373,000 for new club rooms, the Marty Busch Reserve at Sebastopol will receive $315,000 for a master plan, the Eastern Oval will get $240,000 for playing surface improvements, St Georges Reserve will get $80,000 for minor master plan works and the City Oval will also receive $30,000 for minor master plan works.
