THE annual Cutest Cria competition was held over the weekend at the Creswick Woollen Mills and will continue today.A number of crias (baby alpacas) were on show for all to cuddle and caress, along with a range of activities for young and old.Event co-ordinator Olivia Ford said about 500 people attended the event, which is now in its sixth year.Local alpaca breeder Jo Noll said people were often fascinated when they saw an alpaca.“Their fleece is so good at this time of year. How can you not be in love with those eyes?” said Ms Noll, who runs Autumn Gold alpaca stud near Ballan.“People take a real interest in them. It used to be people would just look at them, but now more and more people are looking at buying them.”Alpacas are known for their ability to protect flocks of sheep from foxes – two alpacas are capable of protecting 200 sheep.Male stud alpacas have also be known to sell for more than $100,000.The Cutest Cria competition will continue today, with voters entering the draw to win a range of prizes.And with face-painting, crafts and a heap of cuddly animals, it is a perfect day out for the family.
