South Street reaches a milestone year

WHEN it comes to birthday celebrations, 120 years is nothing short of an incredible milestone. Yesterday, Ballarat’s iconic Royal South Street Society competition was officially launched for 2011. Events will begin next week. City of Ballarat mayor Craig Fletcher was on hand for the official launch and for his slice of cake.This year’s competition will feature debating, one act plays, bands, arias and dance. Preparations for the event began in November, and the society will also host a special exhibition, to open next month.Society president Brian McInnis said the milestone year promised to be the biggest yet.“It certainly is a true Ballarat institution and we are very excited about this special anniversary,” he said.“The many highlights of 120 years will be celebrated, with world-class performances expected again in 2011.”The inaugural South Street competition took place in 1891 and its royal status was granted by the Queen in 1962.
