A BALLARAT football legend was yesterday inducted into the Richmond hall of fame.John Northey was one of three inductees, joining dual Richmond premiership player of the 1930s Joe Murdoch and former captain Matthew Knights.Northey is a dual premiership player with the Tigers.A lightly built half-forward flanker originally from Derrinallum, he earned the nickname “Swooper” while playing a vital role in Richmond’s 1967 and 1969 premiership teams.His playing career spanned from 1963 to 1970 before he embarked on an expansive coaching career.Richmond was also one of four VFL/AFL clubs he coached, having charge of the Tigers from 1993-95.He took them to their first finals campaign in more than a decade in 1995.Northey has also had a long association with the Ballarat Football League and is a member of the competition’s hall of fame.He guided Redan to premierships in 1975, 1976 and 1977, as well as overseeing the BFL to three consecutive VCFL division one titles in 1982, 1983 and 1984.He returned to the BFL in 2005 as coach of the Ballarat Swans, taking them to the 2008 premiership.Northey remains the Swans’ director of coaching.
