IT was not all about the fun and fascinators for the punters at the Ballarat Cancer Research Centre annual Melbourne Cup Day Luncheon.Held at The Mercure Ballarat Hotel and Convention Centre, the long-running event was attended by 170 guests who raised more than $10,000 for the centre. Ballarat Cancer Research Centre events coordinator Nick Sculley said the guests were predominantly women between the age group of 30 to 50 years old.“We haven’t got our final figure. but we are close to what we were aiming to raise,” Mr Sculley said.PHOTO GALLERYThe event, which started at 11am yesterday morning was dubbed as offering all the fun of the races without having to leave the comfort of Ballarat. It is also the biggest fundraiser for the centre which relies entirely on donations. The day featured a fashion parade featuring some of the city’s leading retailers. There was also a Lady of the Day competition which was won by Jacqui Williams. A judge at the fashion competition, Janelle Yates said the clothes were more diverse this year.“I have never seen so much cutting-edge fashion in Ballarat,” Ms Yates said. “The winner had a gorgeous summer day dress in pink, orange and green.“She had a beautiful fascinator of butterflies and orchids in bright pink and orange.”Ms Yates said the winner managed to combine simplicity with colour. “Colour was important this year for the races. “The winner managed it without overdoing it,” she said. Elsewhere, the Ballarat Business Women hosted a November Luncheon for the Girls. Guests had a chance to take part in a number of competitions, including best hat, accessory and Lady of the Day.And for those uninitiated in all things Melbourne Cup, there was also a chance to learn about form guides and placing bets.
