Coach Heath Pritchard said Houghton had fitted in well at the club and was well respected by the player group.
He said Houghton was keen to use his experience from his time in the Williamstown, Footscray and Port Melbourne VFL programs to help improve the Panthers.
“He is completing his level two (coaching qualifications) and is keen to explore coaching going forward.”
Houghton was runner-up in the Melton South best and fairest, playing 13 games.
The Panthers had just one win for the season, finishing with the wooden spoon.
Meanwhile, Melton South’s Lachlan Watkins has re-signed with VFL club Coburg for what will be his first full season with the Lions.
He was added to Coburg’s list mid-season this year.
Watkins, who won South’s best and fairest last season, has committed to retaining the Panthers as his home club.
