While road race events were moved because of heat last year, there are no plans to change Friday’s Cycling Australia Road National Championships criterium program at this point.
Cycling Australia’s heat guidelines state that officials should measure the temperature every half hour once it reaches 31 degrees, and between 38 and 40 degrees, the schedule and program may be modified – endurance events may be cancelled or postponed until later in the day or after sunset.
However, if the temperature hits 41 degrees or higher, all competition is postponed until it drops.
More water and break times will be provided, and participants are advised to “exercise extreme caution”.
Ballarat’s forecast for tomorrow states it will hit 40 degrees about 2.30pm, after a warm morning.
This is about when the community cycle will take place, just before the club criterium race.
A cool change is expected in the afternoon.
