A BALLARAT cancer centre is at the forefront of cancer treatment.
The Ballarat-Austin Radiation Oncology Centre features the latest in technology for scanning tumours - electronic portal imaging.
Next month the centre will host a seminar on imaging technology, which is set to attract more than 150 cancer specialists from across Australia and overseas.
Centre acting deputy manager Mark Middleton said the use of electronic portal technology was providing major changes in treating cancer with radiation.
The combined ability to localise cancers to defined areas and to treat those areas with high precision radiotherapy was providing a powerful new weapon in the fight against cancer, he said.
The use of the electronic portal technology was giving clinicians that weapon, enabling an improvement in treatment quality and survival outcomes for patients with cancer.
The centre had an international reputation as a leader in electronic portal imaging technology, Mr Middleton said.
"It's unique that a regional centre is thought to be at the forefront of cutting edge cancer treatment," he added.
The seminar will be held at Ballarat Lodge on July 1.
