MORE than 100 workers lost their jobs as Penney and Lang abattoirs in Carisbrook closed down yesterday.
Administrators told staff of the closure at 11am.
The company has operated since 1967 and will make its last delivery tonight.
An emotional managing director, Stan Lang, said he never thought he would see the day when the company was closed down.
He praised the positive attitude of staff.
"They (the staff) have been very good. This will affect more people than just here," Mr Lang said.
"The local butcher shop ... all those people who have had 100 per cent production here have to go somewhere else to have their animals slaughtered and brought back."
The company went into voluntary administration a month ago.
Central Goldfields Shire Mayor Geoff Lovett said the news of the closure was devastating.
"In any community it is devastating to lose 100 jobs, and that is particularly true of this area that already has one of the highest levels of unemployment in the state," Cr Lovett said yesterday.
"We're very concerned with the effect this will have on the whole community, but from past experience of major employment retrenchments we know that Maryborough is a resilient community."
Cr Lovett said Penney and Lang was one of the area's top 10 employers.
Centrelink, Tracy, the Placement People and Drake International employment agencies were on hand to inform workers of their options as they picked up their separation notices.
Drake Ballarat region branch manager Linda Reed said the closure would have an impact on the entire region.
"Coming from a local perspective, this is terrible. It will kill the town," she said.
"The workers' ages were across the board, but a lot were middle aged and some have worked there for 25 or 30 years.
"I think a lot will be forced to travel out of town to work."
Information sessions will be held by Drake and Tracy tomorrow at Tracy in Maryborough at 10am and 1pm.
