Luke Harper will board a plane for the Gold Coast next week as a member of the Victorian country team.
Competing over three days, he will play a series of matches against state teams from across the country in the hopes of securing a medal.
As one of only 12 members selected into the squad, Harper said he could not wait to get in the water.
"We have a great bunch of guys who mix really well in the water which showed at our recent training camp," he said.
"I'm mostly looking forward to what the opposition is going to dish out to us."
The nod came about after Harper caught the attention of selectors at the Victorian Country Championships earlier this year.
Boasting a background in swimming and lifesaving, Harper believes his swimming speed and ability to provide break-away opportunities will cause havoc for opposition players.
He told The Courier that Queensland and New South Wales would present the toughest challenge to the squad, but believes Vic country can come out on top.
"We have recently seen the team lists of other states and we're expecting it to be pretty tough," he said.
"We have noticed some states have selected previous Australian Team players and Olympians which we're looking forward to battling with."
The selection will mark the first time Harper has represented Vic Country having only become eligible after moving to Ballarat.
Having played at a state level as a junior and at university, Harper was once named the under-18 player of the year, but gave the sport up to focus on other aspirations.
Currently playing as a member of the Ballarat Water Polo Club, Harper said he loves the dynamics of the sport.
"I love the physicality and tactics required to break down your opponent all whilst keeping your head above the water," Harper said.
