ROHAN Dennis topped off a dominant week of cycling to regain his national under-23 time trial title with a comprehensive victory yesterday.Going in as hot favourite after taking out the road race on Saturday in Buninyong, the 21-year-old powered home to finish 15 seconds clear of his nearest opponent. His time of 33 minutes and 42 seconds over the 27.1-kilometre course saw him finish well ahead of fellow South Australian Damien Howson (33:57) and Tasmanian Campbell Flakemore (34:23). It is the second time he has taken out the under-23 national time trial title, having previously won in 2010. The fourth last rider down the starting ramp, Dennis overtook Nick Aitken and only Howson and Jay McCarthy remained to cross the line before the result was secured. The Team Jaycos-AIS rider said the national championships had been his main goal since he had started training last year. He said that now that he had two national jerseys on his back he would be able to strive towards his next goal of qualifying for the Olympics. The road and track racer will now turn his attention to the track, where he rides for Team Toshiba. He hopes to compete in the national track championships, the track world cup, track world championships and the Olympics.Dennis’ Jayco-AIS team-mate Jay McCarthy crashed with eight kilometres left, costing him a podium finish.
