Sisters Serena Heard and Tammylee Peters are on board the Balmoral, a cruise ship that will track the same path the Titanic did on its maiden voyage 100 years ago.

The Balmoral is making its way to where the Titanic sank in the middle of the North Atlantic, by Sunday, before tracking north-west to Halifax in Canada.

Halifax was the final resting place for many of the 1514 victims.

The cruise finishes on April 20 in New York, the intended destination of the Titanic.

Mrs Heard’s husband Dale said his wife had been planning the special trip for more than two years.

“She’s been interested in the history of the Titanic for a long time now,” he said. “When we saw the Titanic exhibition in Melbourne there were some adverts for the cruise there, so she booked it and effectively we’ve been planning this for two and a half years.

“She loves the history, she’s got a fair collection for the books and memorabilia, she’s even got an official piece of coal from the Titanic.”

The 12-day trip includes a series of lectures about life on the Titanic, as well as themed days and demonstrations.

Mr Heard said the cruise was more than just a holiday.

“They’ve got historians and experts in the history of the Titanic on board,” he said. “They are trying to recreate as many on-board experiences as possible, like the food, menus, events and music.

“For many, they are going because they had relatives on the ship and they are very mindful of the mood of the trip and what it means.”
