Repeat Ballarat shoplifter jailed

A WOMAN has been jailed for six months after two minor shop thefts breached a suspended sentence.

Julie Maree Bahl, 41, was supported by a large group of friends and family when she appeared in Ballarat Magistrates Court yesterday.

The court heard Bahl stole a Nintendo video game unit from Target in Maryborough last July, and then some meat from Woolworths in Wendouree four months later.

In a lengthy plea, defence lawyer David Tamanika tried to establish exceptional circumstances as to why the suspended sentence should not be reactivated, saying Bahl was still suffering grief from her father’s and brother’s deaths when she was younger.

Bahl was also due to become a grandmother, he said.

But magistrate Peter Couzens could not accede to the submission, instead sentencing Bahl to six months in prison.
