BALLARAT'S rising tennis Zoe Hives has had a winning start to close open her career in Australian colours.
She defeated Singapore's Geraldine Ang 6-1 6-2 in the rain-delayed rubber.
The tie began yesterday, but rain restricted play to about 10 minutes.
Hives, 15, from Kingston, was leading 2-1 on serve when play was abandoned yesterday.
Hives has a world junior ranking of 588 and is fresh from a breakthrough ITF junior singles win at the Queensland Junior Claycourt International in Bundaberg.
Ang, 14, is ranked 1882.
Australia's number one player Naiktha Bains (Brisbane) is playing world number 539 junior Rheeya Divyesh Doshi.
Bains is expected to team up with Isabelle Wallace (East Bentleigh) against Doshi and Ming Ming Joy Chia to round out the match against Singapore.
