Catholic Church free to sell land after Mt Clear rezoning

A 4.5 HECTARE block of land at 1503 Geelong Road, Mt Clear, was rezoned residential one at last night’s Ballarat City Council meeting.

The rezoning paves the way for the Catholic Diocese of Ballarat to sell the farmland at the rear of the Emmaus Primary School for housing.

The land was the subject of a recent independent planning panel after 21 submissions were received when the council first advertised the proposed Amendment C143.

But Councillor Des Hudson said the amendment had been through “all the checks and balances”.

He said the absence of any objectors or submitters in the public gallery at last night’s meeting showed a lot of concerns had been alleviated.

Some of the key concerns raised at the panel hearing included traffic, environment, landscape and amenity issues, plus fire and emergency evacuation.

Councillor Ben Taylor supported the rezoning but said further strategic work needed to be done in the green belt area.
