Council drops tourism levy in draft budget

BALLARAT City Council has dumped its controversial economic development and tourism levy in its draft 2012-13 budget.

But a new gaming venue rate has been proposed, meaning commercial pokies venues will pay rates over and above other commercial operators.

The new rate is expected to deliver $70,000 to council coffers.

Local sporting clubs and community clubs on recreation land will receive a full rates rebate.

The council is also proposing an overall rate increase of 4 per cent and will spend almost $37 million on capital works projects.
