Police investigate fatality near Talbot

AN Alfredton man was killed in a single car accident near Talbot on Friday night.

The 28-year-old was driving along McCallums Creek Road in Mount Glasgow, towards the Maryborough-Ballarat Road, about 8pm when his car left the road, crashed through a fence and rolled.

The man, who was the only occupant of the car, died at the scene.

Maryborough Police said the next-of-kin had been notified and investigations were continuing.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.

His death takes the provisional road toll to 108 for the year, compared to 105 for the same time last year.

It is only the third road fatality in the Ballarat region this year, but is the second in a week after well-known cyclist Doug Garley died last Tuesday when he was hit by a car while cycling along the Creswick-Clunes Road near Clunes.

A 63-year-old man was also killed climbing into a moving truck in Hepburn Springs in January.

Victoria Police are currently carrying out the "We are the toll" campaign which focusses on enforcing road safety, with several large-scale road operations planned throughout the state until June 30.

The campaign was launched following predictions this year's final road toll could be 30 to 40 deaths higher than last year.
