BFL youth team: Stepnell on target

LORI Stepnell has started 2012 with a bang.

And now the young Ballarat Swan has a record to her name.

Stepnell, 16, booted seven goals in her team's opening-round victory in the Ballarat Youth Girls Football League on Sunday.

Her efforts helped Ballarat to a big 92-point victory over Sebastopol, which propelled the Swans to the top of the ladder after round one.

The Ballarat High School student's haul is the single biggest in the competition's short history.

The blistering start to the season adds to Stepnell's impressive resume in the sport.

Stepnell won both the league and club best-and-fairest awards in the inaugural 2011 season.

Last year, she was also part of Victorian under-16 and under-18 teams that took out School Sport Australia girls football championships.

She was part of under-18 team that won again at the weekend, as well as Ballarat's successful V/Line Cup team.
