There has already been a couple of falls on the Sturt Street course this afternoon and conditions are expected to worsen as the rain band hits the city.
Up top 10mm of rain is expected to fall in most districts of the state in the coming hours with the temperature already dropping six degrees from a maximum of 28, to 22 degrees at 2.30pm.
Winds have also turned from a straight northerly to a south-westerly with gusts up to 46km/h making life tricky for cyclists heading up the hill west on Sturt Street.
Once the rain band passes, the weekend is expected to be reasonably cool with maximum temperatures of just 19 degrees on Saturday and 22 degrees on Sunday.
The change is yet to hit fire affected areas in the north and east of the state where fire conditions remain extremely dangerous.
