Motorists heading along the Western Highway toward Ararat are being warned of traffic delays after CFA crews were called to a car fire in the emergency lane just after 12.15pm Sunday.

Emergency services received several calls to the fire, which began in the engine bay of the silver sedan just past the Ballarat turn-off.

Half an hour after the first call, traffic was banked back to Warrenheip with cars only able to move slowly past the scene.
