AN OPPORTUNITY to finish dredging work early at Lake Wendouree presented itself with the delivery of a second dredge. The floating dredge was delivered via a crane, a Victorian firm having purchased the machinery from America.City of Ballarat director of growth and economy Jeff Pulford said the second dredge was twice as fast and twice as powerful as the first."It has a three-metre wide dredge compared to a one-and-a-half metre dredge," Mr Pulford said."We're still planning a mid-year completion but with two dredges there is an opportunity to finish earlier."As part of the second dredge, special sediment curtains have been floating around the lake to minimise the creation of turbidity.Mr Pulford said the curtains would ensure the water quality was as high as possible. He also said the dredging works would increase the depth of the lake from 1.7metres to 2.2 metres while bringing it into alignment to host national level rowing events."A very important part of that is Ballarat currently bidding for the World Master Rowing Championships in 2014," he said."We are Australia's nomination for that bid."Council is continuing to closely monitor the characteristics of the dredged material within the containment areas.Lake users are reminded not to enter the exclusion zone while dredging work is being undertaken.Mr Pulford said weed harvesting would commence in the next fortnight, allowing for greater outcomes for the city's rowers.
