Usually reserved for highway traffic, the temporary speed replaced the usual 50km/h and warned of loose stones on the roadside.
Nearby Chisholm Street, Nerrina Road and Stawell Street North are all included in a residential 60km/h speed zone, but the temporary sign appeared to encourage faster driving near the roadworks.
A City of Ballarat spokesperson yesterday said motorists should always drive safely around roadworks.
“Roadworks advisory signs play an important role in keeping motorists and roads construction workers safe,” the spokesperson said.
“The sign on Lofven Street belongs to a subcontractor and has been corrected this afternoon.
