Waubra Wants a Wife: fun night filled with flirting

FIRST it was Wallace, but now Waubra Wants a Wife.

And after more than 400 people crammed into the Ballarat Mining Exchange on Saturday night, several Waubra men might be right to think they’re on their way to snaffling some longer-term female companionship.

Put on by the Waubra Football and Netball Club, the singles night was a huge success, with plenty of phone numbers exchanged, flirting and Facebooking the day after.

Women travelled from as far away as Sydney and South Australia just for the event.

Member of the organising committee Chris Bourke said inhibitions were lost in the mixture of music and mingling.

“There was just a good vibe,” he said.

“Early on there were probably a lot of females, but by 8pm it had balanced right out.

“There was a great atmosphere, a lot of good interactions with the band, a lot of dancing and a lot of people talking to each other.

“It was almost like people had this willingness to go up and speak to people they didn’t know.”

The evening follows several similar events in Wallace, and comes on the back of Waubra farmer Matt Gallagher’s success on the Channel Nine show Farmer Wants a Wife.

“That and the fact that a lot of the guys from Waubra were single and wanted to find a way to meet girls,” Mr Bourke said.

Despite being held in Ballarat,  almost half the crowd was from Waubra, keeping the night true to its name.

“It was still definitely a Waubra event, a truly great turnout from the Waubra community,” Mr Bourke said.

Mr Gallagher, who was among four farmers from the reality television show to attend, said it was a welcome change to enjoy the singles scene away from the cameras.

“It’s definitely a lot easier when you haven’t got cameras in your face and you can chat openly,” he said.

“It was a good night, and I know a lot of my mates got some numbers too, so they did pretty well.

“And judging by how well the night went off and feedback the day after, I’d say we’d be trying to do it again next year.

“I don’t think I heard one person complain.”
