Heavy thunderstorm sweeps across Ballarat

IN case you've slept in and are just logging into The Courier website to catch up on the news, here's the latest: it's raining.

The first drops began falling at midnight, and we've had just over 17mm fall to 8.45am according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Ballarat's historic bluestone gutters were again put to the test, with water gushing out and into roadways around the city.

At the police station on Dana St, visitors and staff had to take the disabled access ramp just to make it over the pop-up river which had decided to establish itself out the front.

When a particularly big lightning bolt flashed across Ballarat north at 8.20am, the traffic lights at the intersection of Doveton and Mair streets blinked out momentarily, before being restored about 10 seconds later.

Anyone who needs assistance with floods or storms can call the SES 132500.
