THE owners of Ballarat’s “worst kitchen” have received the best surprise.
Windermere Street couple Ramsay and Erin Beacham were yesterday announced as winners of the Ballarat’s Worst Kitchen competition, the most popular in The Courier’s history.
Truly deserving of the title, the compact kitchen has been lacking in a few of the features one would normally find – including a kitchen sink.
Instead, the couple have been using a plastic bucket, and their “running water” comes from a plastic drum.
They will receive a kitchen renovation of up to $20,000 supplied by Malcolm Alexander’s Realistic Kitchens just in time for the arrival of their new baby in May.
Realistic Kitchens owner Malcolm Alexander broke the news to the pair yesterday and they couldn’t wipe the smiles from the faces.
“Thank you so much – this is amazing,” Ms Beacham said.
“I just can’t believe we won. Thank god for my mum. She said I should enter.”
They moved into the house a bit over a year ago and have been renovating it since then.
“Everyone just laughs at us when they come here,” Ms Beacham said.
Mr Alexander said all five finalists were worthy of the prize.
“Each of them had a story of their own,” he said. “In this circumstance, they’d taken on this project and then Erin fell pregnant unexpectedly. They’d clearly made a start and were willing to have a go.”
The prize includes taps and sinkware, doors from Polytec, hardware and fittings from Hettich Australia, benchtops and splashbacks by Laminex and a range of Modena appliances.
