A logging truck with mechanical failure started the blaze, which destroyed 12 hectares of blue gum plantation and another three hectares of grasslands in Jones Road at Waterloo.
The CFA say the fire broke out just before 6.30pm, before 17 tankers, three lighter vehicles and several bulldozers were sent to fight the fire.
One firefighting appliance is still on scene this morning to monitor the site, but the fire was brought under control by 10.15pm.
Police from Beaufort initially suspected the fire to be deliberately lit, before the true nature of the accident was revealed.
