Massacre shows kids and guns don't mix

Ballarat High may well have followed correct procedure when taking 12, 13 and 14-year-old students to Beaufort Gun Club for clay target shooting lessons as an optional end-of-year activity, but apart from the insensitive timing (two days after the latest US massacre), do we really want our kids introduced to the gun culture ?

The Victorian Government already bows to shooters. Because of dwindling numbers of recreational duck shooters, regulations were recently changed to encourage children onto the wetlands, and funds have been diverted away from firefighters even though recreational duck shooting seasons continue to be subsidised by taxpayers.

School councils should exclude gun club members when making decisions regarding the promotion and acceptance of a gun culture to our children.
