Amy was killed in 2005 when hit by a car while training in Germany.
This is the first time the ride will unfold in her hometown. A hectic January scheduling will move Amy’s Ride to be the curtain raiser to Cycling Australia’s Road National Championships marquee event, the elite men’s road race.
Championship race director Sean Muir said Australian professional cyclists were passionate about the race and Cycling Australia was happy to work with the Amy Gillett Foundation to bring the event to Ballarat.
“When’s Amy’s Ride was looking for another location it seemed like a good fit for Ballarat,” Mr Muir said.
Ballarat Regional Tourism estimates 1000 riders will sign up for one of three routes – 20km, 70km or 100km – about Buninyong. The Victorian Amy’s Ride began in Geelong in 2006 and usually partnered the Bay Classic criteriums.
