TRADING
THE SKINNY: Landed the big fish of free agency when, on day one, it lured Brendon Goddard from St Kilda on a four-year deal. The Saints refused to consider anything more than a three-year contract. Then traded Angus Monfries to Port Adelaide for a round-three selection. Joe Daniher was announced as a father-son selection, with the Bombers to use their first-round pick (No. 10) on the promising forward. Retained Scott Gumbleton, who agonised over a two-year offer from the Western Bulldogs. Re-signed David Hille and Alwyn Davey, but Nathan Lovett-Murray remains uncontracted.
VERDICT: Goddard will add some much-needed class through the midfield and half-back as the Bombers look to secure a top-four spot. Daniher will be the man they eventually build their forward line around — all going well.
DRAFT PICKS: 10, 35, 52, 55, 75, 93, 111, 129
NATIONAL DRAFT
10. JOE DANIHER (Calder Cannons, 18, 201cm, 89kg)
Tall forward who can also play in the ruck and is a potential star. The Bombers signed the son of former full-back Anthony under the father-son rule two years ago.
34. JASON ASHBY (Oakleigh Chargers, 18, 185cm, 77kg)
Medium-sized defender who is a hard runner, a good decision-maker, capable overhead and effective as a spoiler.
51. DYLAN VAN UNEN (Frankston, 22, 189cm, 88kg)
Mature-age midfielder.
53. MARTIN GLEESON (North Ballarat Rebels, 18, 186cm, 70kg)
Durable for his light frame and capable of playing in defence or on the wing. Good with disposal and blessed with speed and endurance.
74. NICHOLAS KOMMER (East Perth, 22)
Also an established midfielder, who can play in attack.
88. SEAN GREGORY (Calder Cannons, 18, 195cm, 76kg)
Tall defender who gives the Bombers an extra boost in the back line.
101. Pass
106. MARK BAGULEY (Essendon, 25, 180cm, 83kg)
Defender who played seven of the last eight games in 2012 and is promoted from the rookie list.
PRE-SEASON/ROOKIE DRAFTS
Will Hams (No.6, pre-season), Ariel Steinberg (No.8, rookie)
Overlooked Dayle Garlett, who had been training with the Bombers since his off-field discipline questions counted against him in the national draft. Gippslander Hams might be viewed as a safer option but is highly-regarded as an inside midfielder.
