A detour should direct you around a blockage and back onto the same path.
The bike detours that I have seen only send you away from where you want to go, and do not direct you back to where you were heading.
I spent an hour and a half going from the stockyards in Gillies Street to Creswick because the detour signs didn't tell me where to go, only where I wasn't allowed to go.
If the signs had told me to go back to the centre of Ballarat instead of to the left at Sturt Street I wouldn't have wasted so much time and petrol.
