So four years ago, he bought a restored MG Magnette.
"It's a 1955 model but I'm a bit older than that," Mr Ward said.
"An elderly gentleman in Bendigo had already done a lot of the restoration work but I've done a lot of the mechanicals on it."
The Magnette will join 19 other vintage cars from all over Victoria, including club captain Mike Simpson's 1953 Ford Zephyr, as a Ballarat Heritage Weekend display.
The cars have all featured in the hit ABC series The Dr Blake Mysteries filmed in Ballarat last year.
The vehicles will be on show in Camp Street on Sunday, May 12.
Vintage cars from other eras, along with hot rods and motorcycles, will also be on display over the weekend.
Ballarat City Councillor Peter Innes said he was looking forward to exploring this year's event, which has a Stories of Entertainment theme.
"In the past, the vintage cars have been a popular attraction at Heritage Weekend," Cr Innes said.
"We are expecting that interest to increase this year with many people coming along to see if they can recognise the vehicles from watching The Dr Blake Mysteries.
"Whether you are young or old, there is something for everyone at Heritage Weekend, so get your family and friends together and enjoy a weekend exploring our beautiful city."
The Ballarat Heritage Program is available at www.ballaratheritageweekend.com and will also be available in The Courier Thursday.
