WHEN British India's recording studio was flooded, the boys were devastated.
"It was disgusting and horrible. We couldn't walk in there let alone rehearse there," the band's drummer Matt O'Gorman recalled.
"We were in limbo for a few months and we didn't have a place to record so we took out a lease property and soundproofed it.
"All in all it took three years to finish the album but we got there in the end."
Little did O'Gorman and his counterparts Declan Melia, Will Drummond and Nic Wilson know that this mishap was in fact a blessing in disguise, allowing the four-piece to take its time and create a quality album they could all be proud of.
"The whole process has been completely different to any of our other albums," O'Gorman said.
"Our songs were thought about more carefully, the process has taken longer and the album is a lot better for that. The way it worked out was absolutely perfect."
The band's fourth studio album Controller sees a rejuvenated British India back at the top of their game.
Debuting at number 10 on the ARIA Albums Chart, the record is the quartet's third consecutive release to debut in the top 10.
Featuring the hit singles I Can Make You Love Me and Summer Forgive Me, Controller is testament to the group's maturity and further honing of their brilliant talent since their last offering.
Loaded with potent drum beats, exhilarating guitars and hip-shaking melodies, the band has captured the exact poise and swagger that made their previous releases so successful.
As for the title of the record, it ironically came about during a time when the guys thought they were least in control.
"We didn't have a record label or a place to rehearse so we went from having all this stuff going wrong to eventually signing with a label and having a new vibe and new people around us," O'Gorman said.
"We went from not being in control to being in control."
