Twenty two students will perform six dances to music from a Michael Jackson classic through to Lady Gaga as part of a 3500-strong ensemble.
Yuille Community College and Ballarat Secondary College’s Wannik Dancers will also take part, along with the Ballarat Specialist School, whose six-member Thursday Band will be guest performers.
The band, which plays mainly classic rock, will perform Peter Gunn Theme by Duane Eddy.
Bass guitarist Steven Robinson, 17, is keen to hit the stage. “I can’t wait to perform in front of thousands of people,” he said.
Ballarat Specialist School instrumental music teacher Roland Weatherall said the band usually performed at school and end-of-year concerts, but they were keen to flex their musical muscle on a bigger stage.
“We’re performing as a special guest,” Mr Weatherall said.
“The State Schools Spectacular people came and had a look at the band play last year.”
Mount Clear College dance teacher Sue Broadway said the school had been involved in all the spectaculars since they started in 1995.
“Throughout that time, nearly 400 students from the school have participated in the various shows and events,” Mrs Broadway said.
“The school has had students involved in the choirs, the massed dancers, featured dancers and the regional dance ensembles.”
Ms Broadway said the theme for this year’s event was ‘There’s No Place Like Home’.
“Professional choreo-graphers have held four rehearsals with the students in the region and our dancers have rehearsed weekly for the past two terms.”
The students will rehearse today and tomorrow at Hisense Arena before performing two shows on Saturday, at 11am and 5pm.
The Victorian State Schools Spectacular is one of the largest performing arts events in Australia and includes a two to three-hour scripted show featuring choirs, dancers, vocalists, drama and orchestral pieces.
