CHARLIE Cousins remembers Ballarat fondly from stopping into share tea and scones on his way to visit his grandparents in Hamilton.

But he never thought he would be returning as dashing young Ballarat cop Charlie Davis in the ABC drama series The Doctor Blake Mysteries.
“I’ve been brought in to keep an eye on proceedings between Lawson and Blake,” Mr Cousins said. “He brings a bit of friction. He’s definitely a good character but he’s an ambitious young man and he’s determined to do things by the book.”
The role is a new character introduced in the first episode of the show’s second season.
This week, shooting took place at the Ballarat Railway Station, the Ballarat Airport and Reid’s Guest House.
“I love shooting on location and getting out on different sites,” he said.
Mr Cousins said his Scottish roots helped him cope with the Ballarat cold.
“And I spent a bit of time in Ballarat as a kid.”
Mr Cousins graduated from the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in 1999.
So far, his career has been largely based in theatre including Thursday’s Child, Cosi, The Crucible, Pains of Youth, Much Ado About Nothing and For The Birds.
In film, he featured in the award-winning short film Blackwood and was Valma’s friend in Warner Bros’ Scooby Doo.
His television work includes The Mystery of a Hansom Cab, City Homicide, Blue Heelers, Marshall Law, Crashburn, MDA, Beastmaster and The Lost World – Series II.
He is also known for his “blink and you’ll miss it” role in Winners and Losers as Craig Lewis, the ex-husband of key character Tiffany.
But Mr Cousins is clearly relishing his role on The Dr Blake Mysteries.
“It starts off with a bang. It starts at 11 and doesn’t slow down. It’s a rollicking ride.”
