TAKE one Australian classic, add a celebrated composer and award-winning writer, mix in a helping of local talent and you have the perfect recipe for a delicious stage opera.
Performed as part of Victorian Opera's continuing Victorian Youth Opera program, The Magic Pudding - the opera is heading to Ballarat this week, featuring the talents of local soaring voices from Phoenix College and Ballarat Centre of Music and the Arts.
Inspired by the much-loved Norman Lindsay children's classic, the opera follows the adventures of Albert the magical pudding and his companions Sam Sawnoff, Bill Barnacle and Bunyip Bluegum.
"Norman Lindsay's story The Magic Pudding has been a staple of our nation's literary identity, and is one that many of us will remember reading in our childhood," said Victorian Opera artistic director Richard Mills.
"The opera captures the book's distinct sense of larrikinism, while sharing with audiences a unique experience that only professionally produced opera can deliver."
Composed by Calvin Bowman and featuring libretto from Anna Goldsworthy, Mr Mills said The Magic Pudding - the opera would be a heart-warming performance for the whole family.
