TRUST In A Gust made it back-to-back Gold VOBIS features event at Caulfield on Saturday.
With the $100,000 Eureka Stockade already secured on Ballarat Cup Day in November, Trust In A Gust ($2.90 favourite) claimed the $150,000 Gold Carat, 1200m.
The decision by to Weir to freshen up the three-year-old ahead of Saturday’s assignment turned out to be spot on.
Weir thought about spelling Trust in a Gust after the Ballarat win, but after seeing how well the colt was doing in a paddock decided to target Caulfield.
After settling behind two other fancied runners, Trust In A Gust burst through a gap inside the lastl 200m to score.
He defeated Churchill Dancer ($18) by a half length with 1-1/4 lengths to outsider This is the Show ($71) third.
"We put him out in a grass paddock at home for a few days (after Ballarat) and he was just so well in himself," Weir said.
"I had a look at the calendar and I thought, `there's a great prizemoney race coming up' in about six weeks', so it gave us time to freshen him up."
Trust in a Gust has five wins from eight starts for $310,000 – an excellent return given Saturday was his first city success.
Trust in a Gust was the second of three winners for the day for Oliver who leads the Melbourne premiership while Weir went to five in front of
Peter Moody in the Melbourne trainers' premiership.
Weir also had a win at Morphettvile on Saturday, with Stratumsphere ($3 favourite) making it two wins from as many starts since joining his stable.
